Abstract

The article focuses on a large-scale study examining the impact of early adverse experiences on the behavior of pet dogs, particularly regarding aggression and fearfulness in adulthood. Conducted with 4,497 English-speaking dog guardians, the study utilized the Canine Behavior Assessment and Research Questionnaire (C-BARQ) to assess dog behavior and life histories. Findings indicate that negative experiences in the first six months, such as abuse and relinquishment, correlate with increased aggression and fearfulness, with variations observed at the breed level. The research highlights the interaction between genetic factors and individual experiences in shaping socioemotional behavior in dogs. [Extracted from the article]
