Uncovering the risk factors for mortality of carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae infections in Indonesian NICU: A study from a referral hospital.

Abstract

This article focuses on identifying risk factors associated with mortality in neonates infected with carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) in an Indonesian neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). A retrospective review of 50 neonates with K. pneumoniae bloodstream infections found that 80% were CRKP cases, with a mortality rate of 67.5% among these patients. Significant risk factors for mortality included prior carbapenem antibiotic use, packed red cell (PRC) transfusions, and elevated inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein (CRP) and procalcitonin (PCT). The study highlights the urgent need for improved infection control, antibiotic stewardship, and targeted interventions to reduce CRKP-related mortality in neonatal care settings in Indonesia.
