(127) Sexual Health Implications Associated with Psychotropic Medication Use Among Adolescents During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Abstract

This article examines changes in psychotropic medication prescriptions and the use of phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (PDE5i) for erectile dysfunction among adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using a retrospective matched cohort study of over one million adolescents before and during the pandemic, the study found increased prescriptions of antipsychotics and benzodiazepines, alongside a rise in PDE5i use, while prescriptions for antidepressants, anxiolytics, stimulants, and mood stabilizers decreased. These findings suggest a potential increase in medication-related sexual dysfunction in adolescents during the pandemic, highlighting the need for clinician awareness. The study was supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health and the American Cancer Society.
