Abstract

This article focuses on research investigating the anxiolytic-like and antidepressant-like effects of the probiotics Lactobacillus reuteri RC-14 and Lactobacillus rhamnosus GR-1 in ovariectomized rats, a model for menopause-related affective symptoms. Conducted by the University Veracruzana in Mexico, the study found that these probiotics, alone and combined with 17β-estradiol, reduced anxiety and depression-like behaviors via activation of estrogen receptors, effects that were reversed by the estrogen receptor blocker tamoxifen. The findings suggest a potential role for these probiotics in alleviating menopause-associated anxiety and depression through estrogenic pathways, though the authors emphasize the need for further long-term preclinical and clinical studies before therapeutic recommendations can be made.
