Abstract

This article focuses on assessing the prevalence of overweight and obesity among active personnel in the French Armed Forces using 2017 data from the Unique Medical-Military Software (UMMS). The study found that 36.1% of military personnel were overweight and 9.6% were obese, with higher rates among men, older age groups, non-commissioned officers (NCOs), and members of the Gendarmerie branch. While obesity rates in the French military are lower than in the general French population and other Western armies, the prevalence of overweight is comparable. The study highlights the need for targeted prevention efforts, particularly for NCOs and Gendarmes, and notes limitations related to BMI as a sole measure and incomplete data on comorbidities and lifestyle factors.
