Abstract
This article focuses on research from the Chinese University of Hong Kong examining the role of psychological inflexibility (PI) in adolescent Internet gaming disorder (IGD) and social media addiction (SMA). The study surveyed 3,950 secondary school students and found that higher PI was directly associated with increased symptoms of IGD and SMA, as well as indirectly linked through avoidant coping strategies such as cognitive and behavioral avoidance. Emotional regulation strategies did not significantly mediate these relationships. The research suggests that Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which targets psychological flexibility, may be effective in addressing both IGD and SMA by reducing avoidant coping behaviors.
