Abstract
This article focuses on research comparing illness anxiety disorder (IAD) and somatic symptom disorder (SSD) among health-anxious individuals in Sydney, Australia. The study found minimal differences between IAD and SSD in demographic and clinical characteristics, though individuals with SSD reported more somatic symptoms, chronic health conditions, reduced quality of life, and greater health care utilization. The findings also questioned the usefulness of distinguishing IAD subtypes based on the severity of somatic symptoms. The research suggests further investigation into illness course and treatment outcomes for these disorders. [Extracted from the article]
