Abstract

This article presents a workflow model for holistic data management in archival research, addressing challenges in transcription, curation, semantic integration, and exploration of archival documents. The model emphasizes provenance-awareness by decoupling data entry from curation and integration, enabling recursive revision and maintaining links to original sources for verification and long-term validity. It was implemented in the SeaLiT project, which studies maritime history through diverse archival sources in multiple languages, producing a semantic network of over 18.5 million RDF triples to support historians' complex queries and analyses. The workflow involves close collaboration between domain experts and data engineers, uses ontology-based integration (notably the CIDOC Conceptual Reference Model), and incorporates semi-automated tools for transcription and curation to enhance data quality and interoperability.
