Abstract
This article focuses on evaluating the prophylactic use of biologic wound care adjuncts, specifically amniotic-derived products AXIOFILL® and AMNIOEFFECT®, placed over prosthetic vascular grafts to reduce deep wound dehiscence and prosthetic infections in high-risk vascular surgery patients. In a retrospective review of 13 patients with underlying prosthetics in revision fields, obese patients, or those with minimal soft tissue coverage, only one graft infection (8%) occurred, which was associated with a subsequent thrombectomy procedure, and no deep dehiscence exposing the prosthetic was observed. The findings suggest that these biologic products may provide a protective barrier promoting wound healing and preventing deep space infections, though the study's small size, lack of control group, and patient variability limit definitive conclusions. Further research with larger cohorts and controlled designs is recommended to validate these preliminary results.
