Abstract

The article focuses on racial and ethnic differences in cognitive and motor functioning among stroke patients admitted to inpatient rehabilitation facilities across the United States. Using the Functional Independence Measure (FIM), the study assessed Asian (N=5,659), Black (N=51,909), and non-Asian/non-Black (N=174,679) stroke patients, controlling for demographic and clinical variables. Results indicated that both Asian and Black patients exhibited significantly lower cognitive and motor functioning at admission and discharge compared to non-Asian/non-Black patients. These findings highlight potential social determinants of stroke recovery and suggest considerations for clinical neuropsychologists working with diverse inpatient populations.
