Abstract

The article focuses on the process of building resilience in adult children of parents with alcohol use disorder (ACOAs) using a grounded theory approach. Based on interviews with 17 ACOAs in South Korea, resilience development was identified as a four-phase process: exposure to parental AUD, awareness of its impact, active coping actions, and adaptation to live independently. The core process involved accepting the disrupted reality of daily life and striving to maintain normalcy while becoming oneself. The study emphasizes the need for tailored, phase-specific interventions and continuous support systems to foster resilience among ACOAs throughout their development and in response to ongoing life challenges.
