Abstract
This article focuses on the Breast and Gynecologic Oncology System of Excellence (BGSoE), established by the Department of Veterans Affairs Veterans Health Administration (VHA) in 2021 to improve cancer care for women Veterans. The BGSoE provides telehealth oncology services and a comprehensive navigation program that identifies Veterans with breast or gynecological cancers through an electronic health record dashboard using ICD-10 codes and text mining. From 2021 to early 2024, the BGSoE identified 7,205 incident cancer cases, predominantly breast cancer, with a diverse demographic and geographic distribution. To evaluate and enhance these services, the VHA created the Center for Oncology Outcomes Review and Gender (COURAGE), which aims to monitor care quality, assess patient experiences, and support ongoing improvements in cancer care for women Veterans within the VHA system.
