Abstract
The article assesses the therapeutic benefits of codeine (3-methylmorphine), which is used to treat acute and chronic pain, versus the risk of overdosing. Adverse effects of codeine include nausea, vomiting, constipation, sedation and cognitive impairment. It discusses the limited role of codeine in pain treatment due to dose escalation, misuse and potential addiction. It cautions about opioid drug-related deaths, codeine misuse, and circumnavigation of restrictions on over-the-counter sales.
