Abstract
This article examines the risk of Barrett's esophagus (BE) and esophageal cancer (EC) in patients with eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE), an immune-mediated esophageal condition, using data from the US Merative MarketScan® Research Database. Among nearly 3 million adults undergoing first-time upper endoscopy between 2008 and 2020, the prevalence and incidence of BE and EC were found to be comparable between patients with and without EoE. Established risk factors for BE and EC in the general population—such as older age, male sex, hiatal hernia, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)—also predicted BE and EC in patients with EoE. The findings support current clinical understanding that EoE does not increase the risk of BE or EC, indicating that standard BE screening guidelines remain appropriate for patients with EoE.
