Abstract

This article focuses on the impact of dietary fiber intake on bowel-related symptoms in colorectal cancer survivors following surgery. Based on data from the Netherlands’ Colorectal Cancer: Longitudinal, Observational Study on Nutritional and Lifestyle Factors (COLON) study involving 1,751 patients, higher fiber consumption was associated with a reduced prevalence and severity of diarrhea up to five years post-diagnosis. The study also found that bowel symptoms were more common after certain treatments, such as low anterior resection surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. Researchers suggest that dietary fiber may help restore gut microbiota disrupted by cancer treatments and improve stool patterns, highlighting diet as a key factor in symptom management for colorectal cancer survivors.
