Abstract
This article focuses on a study of rheumatic syndromes associated with neoplasia, based on a series of 41 patients identified from 1,098 hospitalized in a rheumatology department between 2000 and 2016. The study found a diverse range of rheumatic manifestations linked to both solid tumors—most commonly lung and gastrointestinal cancers—and hematologic malignancies, with diagnoses of rheumatic disease sometimes preceding, coinciding with, or following cancer diagnosis. Well-defined paraneoplastic syndromes such as hypertrophic osteoarthropathy and palmar fasciitis were highlighted as indicators warranting immediate cancer evaluation, while other manifestations like polymyalgia rheumatica and arthritis without additional symptoms showed less clear associations. The findings underscore the complexity of attributing rheumatic symptoms to underlying neoplasia and the diagnostic challenges involved.
