Abstract

This article investigates the association between stress hyperglycemia ratio (SHR)—a measure quantifying stress-induced blood glucose fluctuations—and moderate to severe periodontitis among individuals with diabetes, using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2009–2014. The cross-sectional analysis of 1,007 diabetic participants found that higher SHR was positively correlated with increased odds of moderate/severe periodontitis, even after adjusting for demographic, socioeconomic, health, and behavioral factors. Subgroup analyses indicated that this association was particularly pronounced among diabetic patients with poor glycemic control, hypertension, or cardiovascular diseases. The study suggests SHR as a potential indicator for early identification of periodontitis risk in diabetic populations, while noting the need for prospective studies to confirm causality.
