Abstract

The article focuses on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and associated lockdown measures on children’s use of digital devices, specifically smartphones and tablets, and the consequent effects on their physical and psychological health. A study of 130 children aged 6 to 18 in central Italy found a significant increase in daily screen time and smartphone addiction scores during the lockdown period compared to pre-lockdown, alongside a rise in headaches upon awakening and a marked decrease in physical activity. These findings suggest that pandemic-related social restrictions exacerbated risks related to excessive digital device use, including sleep disturbances, reduced exercise, and potential psychosomatic symptoms. The study highlights the need for preventive strategies to mitigate negative health outcomes in children linked to increased screen exposure during prolonged periods of social isolation.
