Putting a price on healthy eating: public perceptions of the need for further food pricing policies in the UK.

Abstract
This article examines factors influencing food choice and public perceptions of government policies aimed at improving diets in the UK, focusing on food pricing interventions. Through qualitative interviews with 15 diverse participants in Greater Manchester, key influences on food choice were identified as food price, time constraints, availability, and food knowledge shaped by culture and education. While some participants supported government intervention, particularly mandatory product reformulation of convenience meals and snacks as a less intrusive alternative to taxation, opinions on food taxes were mixed due to concerns about financial impact on low-income groups. The study suggests that population-level policies combining reformulation and enhanced cooking education in schools may be more publicly acceptable and effective than pricing strategies alone in addressing obesity.
