Abstract

This article focuses on a systematic review and meta-analysis conducted by researchers at the Manipal Academy of Higher Education in India, evaluating the efficacy and safety of olanzapine long-acting injection (LAI) in adults with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder. The study found that olanzapine LAI showed comparable effectiveness and tolerability to oral olanzapine in reducing symptom severity, relapse rates, adverse events, and weight gain, based on limited randomized controlled trials. Post-injection delirium/sedation syndrome was reported but resolved without long-term effects. The research suggests olanzapine LAI may be suitable for patients with adherence challenges, though it recommends careful safety monitoring and further direct comparative trials.
