Abstract

This article systematically reviews and meta-analyzes the prevalence and determinants of chemotherapy-related adverse drug reactions (ADRs) among patients with cancer in Ethiopia. Based on seven observational studies involving 1,441 patients, the pooled prevalence of ADRs was 43% (95% CI: 35%–50%), with common ADRs affecting gastrointestinal, hematologic, and integumentary systems and frequently linked to drugs such as cisplatin, doxorubicin, etoposide, and mercaptopurine. Significant predictors of ADRs included age over 65 years, standard anticancer dosing, concomitant medications, polychemotherapy, and specific chemotherapeutic agents. The review highlights the need for tailored ADR monitoring and management strategies in resource-limited settings to improve chemotherapy safety and effectiveness, while noting heterogeneity among studies and a lack of data on ADR preventability.
