Abstract
This article examines how self-reported chronic stress and lifetime smoking behavior moderate the relationship between hippocampal volume and long-term memory in older Hispanic adults. In a study of 841 participants (mean age 63.12 years), both smoking history and chronic stress significantly moderated the association between hippocampal volume and performance on the Wechsler Memory Scale-III Logical Memory Delayed Recall subtest (LM-III). The findings indicate that smoking and chronic stress each influence the link between brain structure and memory, although the effects were small. The study suggests further research to explore dose–response relationships for smoking and potential interactive effects between stress and smoking on brain health and memory.
