Abstract

This issue focuses on the philosophical and medical challenges in defining and determining death amid advances in science and technology, particularly examining the Uniform Determination of Death Act (UDDA). The UDDA, adopted by many U.S. states, defines death as either irreversible cessation of circulatory and respiratory functions or of all brain functions, but its criteria face critiques regarding internal consistency and conceptual assumptions. Articles explore debates over brain death, the role of consciousness, and the ethical, epistemic, and social values influencing death determination, while also addressing alternative accounts such as death defined by irreversible loss of moral status. The collection highlights ongoing tensions between biological, clinical, and moral perspectives on death, emphasizing the need for careful consideration of medical standards, philosophical concepts of function, and respect for diverse viewpoints in policy and practice.
