Abstract
This article reports on a study conducted in Flanders, Belgium, examining life experiences before and during addiction recovery among 343 individuals recovering from alcohol and/or illicit drug problems. Participants were grouped by their engagement with treatment services: unassisted recovery, mutual aid support only, formal treatment only, and both formal treatment and mutual aid support. The research found that while recovery strengths, barriers, and quality of life were similar across groups, those using formal treatment and mutual aid tended to face greater initial challenges, suggesting these pathways provide valuable recovery capital for individuals with more severe dependence. The study highlights that multiple recovery pathways exist, with formal treatment playing an important but not universally necessary role. [Extracted from the article]
