Abstract
This article focuses on research examining the interplay between genetic predispositions for alcohol consumption, partner substance use, and their effects on emotional well-being and relationship quality. Conducted by Rutgers University in Piscataway, New Jersey, the study analyzed data from 2,357 participants in the Collaborative Studies on the Genetics of Alcoholism, using genome-wide polygenic scores (PGS) to assess genetic risk. Findings indicate that partner substance use can both amplify and attenuate genetic influences on individual alcohol outcomes, while discordance in substance use between partners is linked to lower emotional well-being and poorer relationship quality. The research underscores the significance of partner substance use in understanding alcohol use behaviors and associated emotional and relational health outcomes. [Extracted from the article]
