Abstract
The article explores the literary history of indigestion. It discusses early theories about indigestion and constipation, including professor of medicine Bernardino Ramazzini's claim that the stomachs of scholars and philosophers could not properly mulch their food while their brains were busy. It describes authors and literary characters who suffered from indigestion and other stomach problems, such as Franz Kafka and the protagonist of H. G. Well's 1910 novel "The History of Mr. Polly."
