Abstract
This article focuses on the neuropsychological profile of Kearns-Sayre Syndrome (KSS), a genetic mitochondrial and neuromuscular disorder with multisystem effects including vision, cardiac, muscular, and cognitive impairments. It presents a case study of a 46-year-old African American woman diagnosed with KSS, whose symptoms began with vision loss and bilateral ptosis, and who later developed attentional difficulties and memory problems. Neuropsychological evaluation showed mostly intact cognitive functioning, with normal memory and visuospatial abilities but poor performance on one executive function measure. The study highlights the limited understanding of cognitive profiles in KSS and suggests baseline neuropsychological testing to monitor cognitive changes over time.
