Abstract

The article focuses on research investigating how social observational learning can help individuals escape from a learning trap, a self-reinforcing avoidance behavior. Five experiments were conducted, revealing that while some trapped learners benefited from observing a partner's optimal decision-making, the majority remained unable to escape this pattern. Follow-up experiments identified social decision rule inference as a significant barrier to effective observational learning. The findings challenge existing models of social reward learning and emphasize the importance of inference in the learning process. [Extracted from the article]
