Abstract

The article evaluates an integrated substance use and trauma stabilisation group intervention (i-SUD-TS-GI) developed within a UK drug and alcohol service to address the high comorbidity between psychological trauma and substance use difficulties (SUD). Delivered over 12 sessions and informed by the Seeking Safety model, the intervention aimed to be feasible, acceptable, and effective, including delivery by non-psychologist staff. Although the small sample size (eight completers) limited statistical conclusions, trends indicated improvements in trauma symptoms, psychological distress, and recovery from SUD, with qualitative feedback highlighting enhanced safety, self-compassion, coping skills, and hope for the future. High attrition rates were noted, and participants emphasized the importance of skilled practitioner psychologists in facilitating the group to maintain safety and therapeutic effectiveness.
