Abstract
This article focuses on a clinical study conducted in Stavanger, Norway, comparing right unilateral (RUL) electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) with algorithm-based pharmacological treatment (APT) for patients with treatment-resistant bipolar depression. The randomized trial assessed patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) and clinician-rated depression scales before, immediately after six weeks of treatment, and at six months follow-up. Results showed that RUL ECT provided greater acute improvements in symptoms and functioning than APT, although no significant differences were observed between groups at six months. The study highlights the short-term benefits of RUL ECT in managing bipolar depression and was financially supported by the Western Norway Regional Health Authority. [Extracted from the article]
