Abstract
This article examines how Positive Childhood Experiences (PCEs) and comorbid mood disturbances (anxiety and depression) influence flourishing—defined by the Child Flourishing Index (CFI)—in children aged 6 to 17 years diagnosed with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), using data from the nationally representative 2022 National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH). Findings indicate that children with ADHD who experienced more PCEs, such as having a resilient family, a connected caregiver, and community volunteering opportunities, were significantly more likely to flourish, even when accounting for Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and mood disturbances. Conversely, children with comorbid anxiety and depression were less likely to flourish, and the negative impact of ACEs on flourishing diminished when PCEs and mood status were considered. The study highlights the importance of screening for mood disorders and promoting protective relational and community factors to support well-being in youth with ADHD.
