A retrospective study on the diagnostic value of ultrasonography for primary vascular leiomyosarcoma misdiagnosed as deep vein thrombosis.

Abstract
This study focuses on the diagnostic value of ultrasonography in distinguishing primary vascular tumors, specifically primary vascular leiomyosarcoma, from deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a condition with similar clinical and ultrasound presentations that often leads to misdiagnosis. Analyzing ultrasound data from five patients initially misdiagnosed with DVT, the study identified characteristic ultrasound features of vascular tumors—such as heterogeneous echogenicity, vascular infiltration, and surrounding tissue invasion—that were frequently overlooked. The authors recommend careful ultrasound image analysis, consideration of clinical symptoms, use of advanced ultrasound techniques like contrast-enhanced ultrasonography, and interdisciplinary collaboration to improve diagnostic accuracy. Limitations include the small sample size and retrospective single-center design, suggesting the need for larger prospective studies to validate these findings.
