Abstract
This pilot study focused on understanding the experiences and communication expectations of Indian patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) during medical consultations. Using a focus group of 11 patients, the study identified predominantly negative feelings related to physicians' verbal and nonverbal communication styles, including perceptions of insensitivity, lack of explanation, and inattentiveness. Patients expressed clear desires for respectful, informative, and supportive communication that includes active listening and personalized guidance. The findings suggest the potential usefulness of the Relationship: Establishment, Development, and Engagement (REDE) model of communication as a framework for physician communication skills training in India, emphasizing patient-centered approaches adaptable to local clinical settings.
