Abstract

This article focuses on recent research regarding autism spectrum disorder (ASD) following the 2013 publication of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition (DSM-5), which consolidated four previous diagnoses into one. The research, based in Rochester, Minnesota, highlights that the increase in autism prevalence in the United States is largely due to the inclusion of Asperger disorder, or high-functioning autism, characterized by fluent language and intact intellect but challenges in social communication and employment. It notes that many adults with ASD remain undiagnosed and that nonpsychiatric providers may encounter these patients presenting with various comorbid psychiatric and physical conditions. While there is no cure or specific pharmacologic treatment for autism, interventions such as employment and educational support, occupational therapy, and skill-based psychotherapies can improve social functioning and reduce stress and isolation.
