Abstract

This article reviews neurological problems observed in 243 boxers from the 20th century to better understand chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and traumatic encephalopathy syndrome (TES). The most common neurological signs included slurred speech (dysarthria), gait disturbances, and memory loss, with fewer cases showing frank dementia or progressive neurodegenerative patterns. The study found that neurological deficits were less frequently reported in boxers from the latter part of the century, and most cases lacked clear descriptions of progression. These historical findings form the basis for current TES understanding but differ notably from modern clinical criteria.
