Abstract

This article systematically reviews and meta-analyzes the association between occupational asbestos exposure and ovarian cancer risk in women, updating previous evidence and addressing potential misclassification with peritoneal mesothelioma. Based on 18 publications covering 20 populations and 144 ovarian cancer cases, the pooled standardized mortality ratio (SMR) was 1.79 (95% CI 1.38–2.31), indicating an increased risk linked to higher exposure, longer duration, and latency, with stronger associations for crocidolite asbestos than chrysotile. Although some misclassification between ovarian cancer and peritoneal mesothelioma cannot be excluded, analyses suggest that misdiagnosis alone does not fully explain the observed excess risk. The findings support including ovarian cancer among the diseases contributing to the overall burden of asbestos-related occupational morbidity and mortality.
