Abstract
The article focuses on the rising global obesity crisis and explores the potential role of natural carbohydrate (carb) blockers—plant-derived compounds that inhibit carbohydrate digestion and reduce caloric absorption—in managing obesity and related noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). It highlights white kidney bean extract (WKBE) as a prominent example, noting its bioactive compound phaseolamin may aid weight reduction and glycemic control by inhibiting digestive enzymes and modulating metabolism. While some short-term studies show modest benefits, meta-analyses reveal inconsistent effects influenced by diet, dosage, and individual physiology, and long-term safety and efficacy data remain limited. The article emphasizes that carb blockers should be considered complementary to, not replacements for, fundamental dietary and lifestyle interventions, and calls for rigorous clinical trials and quality control in the growing nutraceutical market.
