Abstract
The article focuses on recent research into rhinoviruses, the primary cause of the common cold, and their role in triggering severe respiratory conditions such as asthma attacks and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) flare-ups. Studies using nasal tissue cultures reveal that the severity of symptoms depends on the host’s immune response rather than the virus itself, with delayed interferon signaling allowing the virus to replicate unchecked and provoke harmful inflammation. This research highlights potential targets for drug development to prevent dangerous reactions and suggests that universal vaccines stimulating broad immune protection could be a future strategy to protect vulnerable populations from rhinovirus complications.
