Abstract

The University of Surrey conducted research on the history of LGBTQ+ aversion therapy in the UK during the 1960s and 1970s, using primary sources and personal testimonies. The study highlights the international emergence of aversion therapy and calls for a 'truth and reconciliation' approach to address past harms. Financial support for the research came from Wellcome/Society for the Social History of Medicine Network Funding and UK Research & Innovation. The findings were published in the Review of General Psychology and emphasize the importance of recognizing and addressing historical mistreatment of LGBTQ+ individuals. [Extracted from the article]
