Abstract

This article focuses on recent research from Zhanjiang, People's Republic of China, examining non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) in adolescents through an addiction framework. The study proposes an integrative model linking behavioral, neurobiological, and therapeutic aspects of severe, repetitive NSSI, highlighting addiction-like features driven by negative reinforcement, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis dysregulation, and dysfunctional fronto-limbic brain circuitry. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is identified as the most effective treatment, potentially normalizing neurobiological dysfunctions associated with NSSI. The research emphasizes the interaction of risk and protective factors in the development of this addictive cycle and calls for future studies to identify biomarkers and develop targeted interventions.
