Abstract

This article discusses a case study of a 17-year-old girl with sickle cell disease who underwent an automated red cell exchange (aRCE) procedure. The patient had a chronically elevated platelet count, which can be a complication of sickle cell disease. The article explores the potential benefits of aRCE in reducing platelet counts in sickle cell patients with thrombocytosis, potentially eliminating the need for thrombocytapheresis. The procedure was successful in lowering the patient's platelet count, and platelets were visible in the waste bag after the procedure.
