Abstract
The article focuses on differentiating sexual violence from BDSM (bondage and discipline, dominance and submission, and sexual sadism and masochism), emphasizing that BDSM is defined by consensual sexual interests or orientations, whereas sexual violence involves intentional nonconsensual acts that disregard partners’ boundaries. It highlights the importance of consent as the key distinction, noting that consent violations within BDSM do not necessarily constitute sexual violence but can have serious emotional consequences. The article also discusses challenges clinicians face in distinguishing between consensual BDSM activities and sexual violence, including the role of communication, negotiation of limits, and physical injury patterns. Additionally, it addresses the cultural competence needed when working with BDSM communities and the legal and psychological implications of misidentifying these interactions.
