Abstract
The article focuses on recent research from Katowice, Poland, regarding the role of glycine transporters (GlyTs) in treating schizophrenia and other mental health disorders. Glycine functions as an inhibitory neurotransmitter and a co-agonist at N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDARs), with GlyT1 and GlyT2 regulating its levels in the central nervous system. The study highlights the potential of GlyT1 inhibitors, particularly sarcosine, in enhancing NMDAR function and addressing symptoms of schizophrenia and depression, while also noting challenges in clinical application. Future research is suggested to utilize imaging biomarkers and advanced pharmacological tools to maximize the therapeutic benefits of GlyTs. [Extracted from the article]
