Abstract
This report examines the traditional use and nomenclature of medicinal herbs by the Tsengel Tyva people, an ethnic group residing in northwestern Mongolia's Bayan-Ölgiy province. It details the Tsengel Tyva's ethnobotanical knowledge, including plant species' local Tyvan names, habitats, harvesting practices, and medicinal applications, emphasizing their cultural respect for the environment and customary regulations governing sustainable harvesting. The study highlights approximately twenty key medicinal plants used in folk medicine, correlating Tyvan, Mongolian, and scientific names, and notes the risk of knowledge loss due to modernization and migration. It also contextualizes this indigenous knowledge within broader Mongolian botanical research and current challenges related to overharvesting and biodiversity conservation.
