Abstract

This article critically examines the adaptation and normative processes of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale–Fourth Edition India version (WAIS-IV India), highlighting concerns about its cultural appropriateness and representativeness. The WAIS-IV India, adapted from the U.K. version (itself adapted from the U.S. version), was normed primarily on a highly educated, urban, fluent English-speaking sample that does not reflect India’s linguistic diversity, educational variability, or regional demographics. Minimal cultural and linguistic adaptations were made to test items, raising questions about the test’s reliability, validity, and construct equivalence within the heterogeneous Indian population. The study underscores the need for more culturally sensitive test development, advanced psychometric methods, and locally grounded normative data to ensure ecological validity and accurate assessment of intelligence in non-Western contexts like India.
