Abstract

This article focuses on a case of acute viral hepatitis (AVH) co-infection with hepatitis A virus (HAV) and hepatitis E virus (HEV) in a 20-year-old male patient with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). It highlights that co-infection with HAV and HEV, transmitted via the fecal-oral route, can cause severe hepatic dysfunction, particularly in individuals with pre-existing conditions like diabetes, which may complicate metabolic control and prolong recovery. The case underscores challenges in managing blood glucose levels during AVH co-infection and emphasizes the potential benefit of HAV vaccination in high-risk groups such as diabetic patients. Preventive measures for HEV focus on hygiene and safe food and water practices, as no widely available vaccine exists.
