Abstract
The article focuses on research examining the effects of monosodium glutamate (MSG) on neurodegeneration and behavioral dysfunctions induced by social defeat stress (SDS) in mice. Conducted by researchers at the University of Ibadan, the study found that MSG exacerbated depression and anxiety-like behaviors, impaired social interactions, and increased blood glucose and corticosterone levels in mice subjected to SDS. Additionally, high doses of MSG were linked to increased neuronal degeneration in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex, along with decreased brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression in these regions.
