Abstract
This article summarizes a study conducted by the University of Oviedo in Spain examining the prevalence and correlates of medical cannabis use (MCU), recreational cannabis use (RCU), and combined medical and recreational cannabis use (MRCU) among U.S. adults based on 2022 National Survey on Drug Use and Health data. The study found that 11.14% of cannabis users reported MCU, 83.02% RCU, and 5.83% MRCU, with MRCU users exhibiting higher rates of cannabis use disorder (CUD) and poorer mental health outcomes, including serious psychological distress and major depressive episodes, compared to MCU and RCU groups. The research highlights the need for physicians to carefully assess patients for CUD and mental health conditions when considering medical cannabis treatment and to provide appropriate referrals when necessary.
