Abstract
This article focuses on disenfranchised grief as a component of recovery from acquired brain injury (ABI), emphasizing its societal under-recognition and impact on individuals' sense of self and functioning. Disenfranchised grief refers to grief related to non-death losses, such as loss of identity or abilities, which often goes unacknowledged during neuropsychological assessments. The review highlights that unaddressed disenfranchised grief can contribute to emotional difficulties and hinder cognitive performance and daily functioning. It suggests that neuropsychologists have a role in addressing this grief during feedback sessions to support holistic recovery and adaptation. The article calls for further research into the cultural aspects influencing the experience and recognition of disenfranchised grief.
