The role of consciousness development in coaching for sustainability leadership.

Abstract
This article examines the relationship between consciousness development and leadership performance in the context of sustainability, based on a co-operative inquiry involving thirteen leaders from diverse sectors committed to societal benefit. It finds that leaders who develop higher, post-conventional stages of consciousness—characterized by expanded awareness, multiple intelligences, and ego healing—are better able to sense and respond to complex sustainability challenges, often entering a flow state marked by ego transcendence. The research suggests that coaching psychologists should acquire skills to support leaders in cultivating altered states of consciousness (ASCs), including peak experiences and flow, as these states may facilitate advanced consciousness development necessary for effective sustainable leadership. While mindfulness is commonly used in coaching, the study argues that broader engagement with ASCs could enhance leadership development to meet societal sustainability goals.
